Fertility Q & A

How common is it for couples to need fertility services?

Infertility is a common problem even among healthy couples. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 6 percent of all married women have trouble getting pregnant after a year of trying, while 11 percent of women of child-bearing age have trouble getting pregnant and carrying a pregnancy to term. Men can also have problems with infertility.

What are some common reasons for infertility in women?

Women can be less fertile if they do not ovulate or have irregular ovulation. This can be due to conditions such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) or reduced ovarian reserve. Blocked fallopian tubes and an abnormal uterus shape can also reduce fertility.

Risk factors for infertility include age over 35 years, obesity, rapid weight gain or loss, excessive use of alcohol, and stress. You may consider going to a fertility doctor if you have risk factors for infertility.

What is IUI?

Intrauterine insemination, or IUI, is a method of trying to get a woman pregnant other than by intercourse. This method can help couples get around problems such as poor semen quality or reduced ovulation. It involves placing sperm samples in the uterus and hoping the woman conceives.

IUI may be done in conjunction with ovulation-inducing medications, such as Clomid. It increases the likelihood of conception because the sperm are placed in the uterus rather than simply in the cervix.

How can I try to reduce infertility naturally?

Often, simple lifestyle changes can increase your fertility. If you are overweight, losing weight can help restore regular ovulation. Similarly, if you are underweight, gaining weight can help. Exercising regularly and trying certain fertility medications are other approaches that may restore fertility to couples.
