Gynecological Procedures & Surgeries Q & A

What are some standard gynecological procedures?

At a minimum, women should visit a gynecologist for an annual Well Woman exam. This typically includes a pap smear and breast exam. If you are concerned about sexually transmitted diseases, such as gonorrhea, HIV/AIDS, or syphilis, your doctor can order the appropriate screening tests. Other procedures can include the following:

  • D&C, if you have had previous miscarriages.
  • Female sterilization, such as tubal ligation (“tying the tubes”)
  • Removal of genital warts.

Does a gynecologist really do surgeries?

Yes, there are some surgeries that your gynecologist can perform. These are relatively minor surgeries, but can be important for keeping you healthy. These are some examples of procedures that your gynecologist may perform.

  • Endometrial biopsy to analyze the tissue of your uterus lining for cancer or in fertility treatment.
  • Colposcopy as a follow-up for abnormal pap smear results.
  • Hysterectomy to remove your uterus, such as because of fibroids, chronic pain, or cancer.
  • Ovarian cyst removal.

How should I choose a gynecologist?

A gynecologist cares for women throughout some of the most important times in their lives, so you want one that is well qualified. Beyond a good medical school, see whether the gynecologist is affiliated with a prestigious university; this can mean that the doctor is well respected and stays up to date on developments in the field.

In addition to looking at credentials, think about the personal relationship you will develop with your gynecologist. Over the course of years, your doctor can get to know you as an individual and you can begin to trust that your doctor knows what is best for you. As you select a gynecologist, consider your gut feeling and select a doctor with whom you feel comfortable.
