How common are STDs?
In 2013, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported almost 1.5 million diagnosed cases of sexually transmitted diseases. This included over 300,000 cases of gonorrhea and over 17,000 of syphilis. Other concerns include:

How can you tell if you have an STD?
STD screening is the only way to know if you have an infection or not. Some STDs do not present symptoms, so you might be a carrier without even knowing IT. Some symptoms to be aware of include:
- Painful urination
- Lower abdominal pain
- Vaginal discharge
- Pain during sex
- Abnormal bleeding
- Anal itching
- Strong odor
- Rash or genital sores
Without proper screening, there is no way to be sure that you are clear of an STD infection, however. You should not wait to become symptomatic to get tested.
How often should you get tested?
Some STD screening is done yearly such as Chlamydia and gonorrhea. The CDC recommends screening for these infections be done on all women under the age of 25 who are sexually active.
The doctor will do a Pap smear checking for HPV and cervical cancer regularly. You should always get screened if you suspect exposure or when starting a new relationship. Insist any potential partner go through STD screening, as well, to avoid tramission of the disease.
The doctor will want to do screening should get pregnant or decide to try have a baby, as well. If you test positive, there are proactive treatments available to safeguard both you and your baby.
