Gynecology Q & A

What is gynecology?

Gynecology is the field of medicine dedicated to keeping a woman’s reproductive system healthy. Though you should have a gynecologist even when well, a gynecologist is more specialized than a primary care doctor. Most gynecologists are also obstetricians, and they monitor your pregnancy before the arrival of your baby.

Which services does a gynecologist provide?

Gynecologists provide preventive care, such as Well-Woman exams. These might include regular screening tests such as a pap smear, breast exam, and a pelvic exam. The exam also provides the opportunity for you to discuss any concerns with your gynecologist, such as fertility issues or questions about abnormal rashes.

A gynecologist also works to treat any disorders or conditions you have, such as endometriosis, genital warts, and yeast infections. Services can also include the following.

  • Following up on a pap smear with abnormal results.
  • Discussing concerns over fertility and performing basic infertility tests.
  • Diagnosing and treating menopause.
  • Identifying possible causes of irregular or missed periods and working to correct the situation.

How should someone choose a gynecologist?

Your gynecologist can be by your side during many of the most important events in your life. Gynecologists are also key in helping you get well and screening for early detection of diseases such as cancers related to women. For these reasons, your choice of gynecologists is an important decision.

Be sure to select a gynecologist who is board-certified by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Also, use your gut feeling to decide whether you feel you can trust and be open with your gynecologist. You need to be able to communicate openly with your gynecologist on potentially sensitive topics. It may take a few tries to find the right gynecologist for you, but the effort can be worthwhile and even life-saving.
